When Angelina Jolie, 37, discovered the had the “faulty” gene BRCA1, which put her at an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer, she had a double mastectomy to prevent the onset of the deadly disease. But the gene also means the Oscar-winning actress is at a 50 percent risk of developing ovarian cancer — so she’s removing her ovaries next.

Angelina revealed her brave decision on May 14 in a New York Times op-ed piece she penned, and said she started with having her breast tissue removed — but is planning on removing her ovaries too.
“I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex,” she wrote in her piece.

While the brave actress kept her mastectomy procedures private — she underwent three operations in all — her fiance Brad Pitt was by her side the entire time. She detailed Brad’s love and support in her New York Times piece.
"I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive. So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition. Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has," she wrote on May 14.
