With almost a month to go until the next new episode of The Vampire Diaries — on March 14, Elena becomes a “dangerous” cheerleader, so I hope you’re excited — we at HollywoodLife.com are taking time to reflect on the epic mess that has been season four thus far. From hot hookups, to shocking deaths, to gratuitous shirt-rips, we’re counting down our favorite “WTF” moments from the fourth season. You know, so far.

1. Elena Bares Her Fangs

We spent most of Summer 2012 wondering what Elena (Nina Dobrev) was going to be like as a vampire, and all of our questions were answered on the fourth season premiere, when she fanged out to stop Damon (Ian Somerhalder) from killing Matt (Zach Roerig). And thank God! Any vampire that keeps Matt Donovan alive and well is A-OK with me.

2. Alaric Misses Damon Too, ‘Buddy’

Just when we thought Damon’s passionate speech about broneliness — loneliness for bros, duh! — his old drinking buddy appeared in ghostly form behind him. “I miss you too, buddy,” Alaric (Matt Davis) said, as the world wept. And this was months before Cult premiered, so aside from watching Legally Blonde a million times, we were completely devoid of Matt Davis. It sucked.

3. ‘Stelena’ Goes Down Like The Titanic

Elena totally lost her mind while inflicted with the Hunter’s Curse — stabbing Jeremy to death was among her worst offenses — and when she finally shook it off and came to her senses, she was forced into an awkward chat with Stefan (Paul Wesley) that ended in him dumping her. “Dear vampire diary, today sucked. Love, Elena.”

4. Elena & Damon Do Some Naked Sire-Bonding

I don’t care what influence Elena was under, sire bond or otherwise, when she had sex with Damon for the first time — that scene was hot! And it was long time coming, which made all the biting and shirt-ripping and the wall-slamming-into all the more beautiful.

5. Klaus Straight-Up Drowns Tyler’s Mom

Because no one is allowed to not be an orphan in Mystic Falls, Tyler (Michael Trevino) lost his second parent on the show’s first-ever not-so-joyous Christmas episode. During a particularly eerie rendition of a holiday classic, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) held Mrs. Lockwood’s head in the town-square fountain until she stopped being alive. Oh yeah, and Klaus’ face was already dripping with blood, so it was just super-romantic.

6. Stefan Rebounds With Rebekah

There’s nothing quite like seeing a pair of old flames burning bright once again! When Stefan and Rebekah (Claire Holt) dropped their emotional attachments — and their pants — this season, you could practically hear the fireworks going off. Then again, those popping sounds could also have been her bed falling to pieces.

7. Jeremy Gets Ripped

We’re not sure when Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) got insanely jacked, and we’re not sure we even care. We just know we very much enjoyed seeing him tear his shirt in half in the middle of the Salvatore mansion, revealing his completed Hunter’s Mark. Not so little anymore, eh “Little” Gilbert?

8. Ty Says Bye

Tyler has been in and out of Mystic Falls more than almost anyone at this point, but that doesn’t make his long goodbyes any less sad. Watching Caroline (Candice Accola) lose him again — sort of — was a total downer, but at least we’ll have hot hybrid sex to look forward to upon his return!

9. Katherine’s Komeback

I’ve never been so happy, yet so pissed, to see anyone in my entire life as much as Katherine when she suddenly popped up at Silas’ tomb. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good doppelganger fake out, but that bitch is the real reason Jeremy is dead. So she can die in a fire for all I care.

10. Little Gilbert, Big Death

Julie Plec giveth, and Julie Plec taketh away. Just as we were getting used to the idea of Jeremy being an all-grown-up, bad-ass vampire hunter, Silas — with a little help from Katherine — had to go and kill him! Watching Elena’s “brother” fall down, limp and lifeless, was like watching the death of a defenseless baby bunny. A really sexy, brooding, defenseless baby bunny.

11. Burn, Baby, Burn!

In quite possibly my favorite metaphorical-but-also-literal scene in Vampire Diaries history, Elena set fire to her house — and her past! Do you get it now? It’s layered.
