Miracle Baby Born With HIV 'Cured' Two Years Later In Historic Case Mar 4th 2013, 19:13 In a landmark medical case, a Mississippi baby diagnosed with HIV at birth more than two years ago is reportedly ‘functionally cured’ of the virus. If she remains healthy, she’ll be the second only known person in the world to be cured of HIV. A Mississippi baby, who was born with HIV, is now “functionally cured” from the deadly virus that causes AIDS more than two years after her diagnosis, according to a report released by The Foundation for AIDS Research. The case, which was presented on March 3 at the 2013 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta, marks a giant step in future HIV treatment. The young child, whose name remained anonymous, had not taken her antiretroviral medication for about a year, and still did not display any signs of the HIV infection. If the child's health remains in good condition, it would mark the second time in the history of the world that a person has been cured of HIV — and the first documented case of a child being cured of the deathly virus, according to ABC News. The HIV Baby’s Unique Case The infant's mother was HIV positive, but did not get the proper prenatal care or HIV treatment before giving birth, Dr. Rowena Johnston, director of amfAR, told ABC News. Nearly 30 hours after birth, the infant began an antiretroviral treatment at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Three powerful antiretroviral drugs, AZT, 3TC and nevirapine, were prescribed to the baby by doctors after birth. Dr. Johnston believes that prescribing the particular three medications to the infant so early is what made a difference. "If one had to make an educated guess, the difference was receiving the treatment dose very soon after birth, earlier than standard care in the U.S.," Dr. Johnston said. The baby’s viral load test came back as high, and then decreased in the first month of treatment. Viral loads were detected three times but became undetectable by the time the baby reached one month of age. The baby was being treated and under doctor's care until she was 12-15 months of age, but the doctors lost contact with the mother, causing the baby to stop receiving medication. At around 23 months of age, the baby returned for care. Despite being off treatment for a year, virus loads were shockingly still undetectable. Dr. Johnston identifies the results as shocking since doctors usually do not advise stopping treatment at any time in children who are born with HIV. The mother’s HIV is medicated and controlled while she is "quite excited for her child," says Dr Hanna Gay, a pediatric HIV specialist at the University of Mississippi, who was initially surprised by the results. "Highly sensitive" tests confirmed the disappearance of the virus, according to the news release. Hugh Hefner‘s ex told the Las Vegas Sun that she was planning on checking into the hospital on March 4 — a day before her baby girl is due to arrive. “It’s time now,” she told the paper on March 3. “We have decided to induce the delivery if necessary.” But just because the super-pregnant Holly is ready to go into the hospital before her due date, she may not give birth for a couple more days. “I will go in Monday (March 4) afternoon or early evening. It still might take up to three more days, though,” she added. 'Teen Mom 2′ Preview: Leah Agrees To Go To Counseling With Corey Mar 4th 2013, 17:57 Even though Leah Messer is engaged to Jeremy Calvert, she still decides to see where her relationship with her ex-husband Corey Simms stands — and goes to counseling with him! While a confused Leah Messer still makes up her mind on which relationship she wants to pursue – her baby daddy and ex-husband Corey Simms, or her new fiance Jeremy Calvert — she confesses to Jeremy that she has agreed to go to therapy with Corey during the March 4 episode of Teen Mom 2. Leah tells Jeremy that she has been trying to figure out what to do with her relationship drama without dragging Jeremy along and leading him on, but that it has been really hard for her, especially because she had no closure with Corey. Even though she wants to still be engaged to Jeremy, she said she agreed to go to counseling with Corey. Understandably frustrated, Jeremy asks Leah if that means if they are done — and Leah says they are! “I have to figure out what I want,” she says. “So you just expect me to just put my life on hold until you find out what you want?” Jeremy fires back, and says he doesn’t want to be with anyone else except for Leah — even though he has put up with so much from her already. But Leah insists he doesn’t understand. “If I was in his shoes, I would have never left my family,” Jeremy says about her ex. “When it comes to Corey, you’re blind.” He also reminds Leah that the girls are getting older, and are old enough to pick up on if their parents start fighting again if it doesn’t work out — which isn’t fair to anyone. 'Once Upon A Time' Spoilers: Snow's Revenge, Peter Pan's Arrival & More Mar 4th 2013, 17:53 Spoiler alert: Stop reading if you don’t want a sneak peek of what’s to come as ‘Once Upon A Time’ nears its season finale! The cast and creators of ABC’s Once Upon A Time came together March 4 to discuss the inner workings of the show at PaleyFest 2013 — but the panel quickly shifted into a spoiler-fest! Read on to find out what we can expect from Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) embracing her dark side, Charming (Josh Dallas) exploring a new path, and the impending arrival of a certain boy who never grows up. Neverland Is Coming, But Peter Pan May Have To Wait The writers have been dropping hints about Neverland in recent weeks — after the March 3 episode, I theorized that Neal (Michael Raymond-James) could actually be Peter Pan, himself — and it sounds like those “hints” are about to take shape. Creator Edward Kitsis revealed that a new land will be introduced this season, and although we’ll hear a lot about an important character from that land, but we won’t actually meet him/her — in the form of that character, at least — until the show’s third season. Given that the final two episodes of season two are titled “Second Star To The Right” and “And Straight On ‘Til Morning,” I’m thinking the land in question is Neverland. (And that the character is none other than Peter Pan.) Snow White Embracing The Dark Side When Snow vowed to kill Cora on the March 3 episode, many fans — myself included — suspected we might see her embrace the dark side to exact revenge. Lo and behold, Ginnifer confirmed our fears at PaleyFest, promising that fans can expect a major shift in her Storybrooke persona. “What she is going through is going to shake her self-identity, her self-definition,” Ginnifer revealed. “If she's not the Snow White she can read about it in story books, then she doesn't know who she is. That opens a lot up for her. She can get in touch with a more evolved way of protecting herself and her family.” And it sounds like Lana Parrilla is just as excited about ‘Dark Snow’ as we are: “We're definitely going to see a different side to Mary Margaret,” she said. “I think we've earned it.” More Trouble For Snow & Charming? Remember when Ginnifer told HollywoodLife.com that wanting “different things” could cause trouble in Charming and Snow’s relationship? It sounds like that trouble is about to arrive. “As much as David likes electricity, he misses his sword and his castle and his horse,” revealed Edward. “He wants to rebuild his land. Carnie Wilson: Tori Spelling & Dean McDermott Would Have Sex In A Hot Air Balloon Mar 4th 2013, 17:37 Singer Carnie Wilson recently became close friends with Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott, and she’s telling HollywoodLife.com exclusively that recent divorce rumors are all false! In fact, they’re madly in love. When Carnie Wilson competed on season two of Rachael Vs. Guy on the Food Network, she came in second place behind winner Dean McDermott. Since then, she’s stayed in touch with Dean and his wife Tori Spelling, considering them good friends of hers, and she’s setting the record straight regarding recent divorce claims. After the season ended, Carnie created a relationship with both Dean and Tori, outside of the show. “They are wonderful people, I love them,” she exclusively told HollywoodLife.com at the Lane Bryant Store Opening on Thursday, Feb. 28. ”They’re my friends now. They came to see our show. Tori — what can I say, she has four children! Working moms, that’s what we are.” Tori & Dean Are Obnoxiously In Love Carnie seemed shocked by rumors of the couple’s alleged marriage troubles. “They don’t have a rocky relationship,” Carnie said of the parents of four. ”That’s not true at all.” She actually began laughing when asked about the rumors, as if they were so ridiculous. “Are you kidding me?” she asked. “Do you know how on love they are? It’s obnoxious! I mean, they would have sex hanging from a hot air balloon … I’m not kidding! They worship each other and they respect each other.” Divorce Claims Have Hurt Tori’s Children Carnie isn’t the first to speak out about the divorce rumors. Tori took to her blog on the same day to lash out at Star magazine for their headlines that apparently hurt and confused her four children. “He first spotted me on the cover, then Dad, and then a picture of himself and his 3 younger siblings,” Tori wrote of her son seeing the magazine. “He was able to read two things out loud, the word DIVORCE (which he proudly sounded out) and the caption above his picture which read 'Who will get the kids?'
