The 97th running of the most famous car race in sports had a thrilling ending when the Brazilian driver took the lead with 3 laps to go and brought home his first ever Indy 500 title.
They don’t call it the Greatest Spectacle in Racing for no reason! In an exhilarating race on May 26, Tony Kanaan pulled ahead late and climactically grabbed the checkered flag. It was his first Indianapolis 500 win in 12 tries.
Tony Kanaan Wins The 97th Indy 500
Tony stole first place from Ryan Hunter-Raey after a restart with just three laps to go. And when the caution flag flew seconds later after a crash involving Dario Franchitti, the field was frozen and Tony became the winner after 500 long miles.
Rookie racer Carlos Munoz finished second, with Ryan and Dario following behind.
Tony has had a long, great career as a driver, and this Indy 500 win just caps it off. “I got a little bit of luck today,” Tony told USA Today. “It’s for the fans. It’s for my dad who’s not here. But mainly for all of you guys. I was looking at the stands, and it was unbelievable.”
Tony is highly respected in the racing world, and his excited but humble reaction to winning the biggest prize in racing is the reason why:
I want to thank everybody. I’ve never seen so many people from other teams [offering congratulations]. This is it, man. I made it. I’m finally going to put my name on that trophy… We were known for not winning, now we’re known for winning. I don’t know what to say.
