Don’t expect to return to Kansas any time soon! According to HollywoodLife.com’s sister site Variety, Disney is already moving ahead with plans for a sequel to ‘Oz the Great and Powerful!’
Oz the Great and Powerful bowed on March 8, but Disney is already planning a sequel to the prequel of The Wizard of Oz. Will you make a return to Oz?
According to HollywoodLife.com’s sister site Variety, screenwriter Mitchell Kapner, who co-wrote the first film with David Lindsay-Abaire, will return to write the second.
No details have been revealed, but plot points featured in L. Frank Baum's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” are fair game to use because its public domain. Iconic creative additions from the original film, The Wizard Of Oz, are not free to use, however (i.e. Dorothy’s ruby slippers). The 1939 film is owned by Warner Bros.
Disney declined to comment on a sequel to Oz.
The film, starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, is expected to open around $80 million this weekend domestically. According to Variety, Mitchell was tapped to write a screenplay for the sequel several months ago. Obviously, the studio had confidence that Oz would be a huge hit!
And don’t expect to have to wait a while before the sequel arrives in theaters. Disney is planning on getting it out as fast as possible.
