Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was discovered hiding and later captured in Watertown, Mass. on Friday night, April 19, putting an end to a draining day-long manhunt and a tragic week overall. Keep for the remarkable details of how police got their man, and how they were able to take him alive.

Boston — and the entire nation — rejoiced on Friday night, April 19, when news broke that Dzhokhar Tsnarnaev, the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, had been located and arrested in Watertown, Mass. Dzhokhar was found hiding in a Watertown resident’s boat, seriously wounded but still alive.

Boston Bombing Suspect Captured In Manhunt

Just minutes after Boston police lifted the city-wide order to remain indoors, Watertown resident David Hanberry noticed that the tarp covering his boat in his backyard and been disturbed. Checking to see what was wrong, David was shocked to find Dzhokhar curled up inside the boat, covered in blood. He immediately alerted police.

SWAT, ATF, and many more police were at David’s house within minutes. With a ramped up police presence around David’s house and boat, officials surrounded the suspect. Using a thermal imaging camera from a helicopter, police were able to see that Dzhokhar was badly injured — likely from the shootout he and his brother/accomplice Tamerlan engaged in earlier that morning – and weakened from blood loss.

As police closed in Dzhokhar at first showed resistance, engaging in another shootout with police that reportedly resulted in two more gunshot wounds. Finally, after realizing that he was cornered, the suspect gave himself up to police.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Taken To Boston Hospital

After being arrested and detained, Dzhokhar was taken to Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he is in serious condition. “He had lost a lot of blood. He was so weak that we were able to just go in and scoop him up,” state police spokesman David Procopio told the Boston Herald. The main focus now will be keeping Dzhokhar alive so that he can be questioned in full.

The suspect will also be officially charged sometime soon in the coming days — he will likely face state and federal charges for his violent crimes at the Boston Marathon and during his attempted escape.

The Boston police, FBI, and all other officials showed extreme courage and skill capturing Dzhokhar (and the job done by Watertown citizens like David can’t be overstated). It is one thing to find and capture a suspect, but it is even more remarkable to get him alive without having to lose any more lives. The cheers that police heard from Watertown residents as they filtered out of the town on April 19 were very well deserved.

We’re so thankful that this terrifying week, beginning with the marathon bombings on April 15, has finally come to an end.
