Well this is an incredible development. Less than a week after Charice bravely came out as gay, her mother revealed that she used to be a lesbian as well during a press conference in the Philippines.
Apparently Charice’s mother was compelled by her daughter’s courageous decision to come out last week on June 2, because during a press conference on June 7, she admitted that she is a former lesbian.
Racquel Pempengco: Charice’s Mother Reveals She Was A Lesbian
“I used to be a lesbian,” an emotional Racquel Pempengco said according to the Manila Bulletin. The Glee star’s mother went on to explain that she turned her back on homosexuality after her mother, Tess Relucio, convinced her to build her own family.
Racquel eventually married her husband Rick Pempengco and the couple had two children together — Charice and Charice’s brother, Carl.
Charice’s Family Concerned About Her Lifestyle
Though you’d think Racquel would be able to relate to what her daughter is going through, she also revealed in the press conference that a rift has developed between Charice and her family. She stated that she didn’t approve of the people Charice hangs out with, and that she feels as if Charice has turned her back on her family.
Tess, Racquel’s mother and Charice’s grandmother, echoed those feelings. In an interview in the Philippines, Tess stated that she believes Charice needs the same sort of convincing Racquel had when she was younger.
In their statements, both Racquel and Tess were pining for Charice to come back and live with the family again, seemingly suggesting that she abandon her lifestyle. “Have some sympathy for your mom,” Tess said in her native Filipino language.
Charice, when alerted to the statements made by her grandmother, responded with a few stark words: “My lola knows how much I love her, and how much I love my family.”
We’re still so proud of Charice. Clearly she has these family issues to combat along with the things that came along with revealing her sexuality, but she is handling everything with bravery and grace.
