The Frenchie did it! Another exciting Wimbledon tournament came to an end on July 6 when Marion cruised to a finals victory over Sabine Lisicki.

We knew going into the women’s Wimbledon final that we’d be seeing a first-time champion, it was just a question of who. Marion Bartoli made it clear very early who the champion would be, easily overpowering her opponent Sabine Lisicki in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

It was a truly impressive showing for Marion, who was playing in her first Wimbledon final since losing to Venus Williams in 2007. In an unpredictable year where all the heavy-hitters dropped like flies during the iconic tournament, Marion was the constant. She displayed pure grit and strength on her run to the championship, and she didn’t let up in the final.

It’s Marion’s first major win, and she truly earned it.

Sabine Lisicki: So Close, But So Far

You have to also tip your cap to Sabine though, the 23-year-old from Germany who was definitely this year’s Cinderella story. Sabine quickly became a crowd favorite after upsetting Serena Williams in the fourth round, and her youthful exuberance and massive serve captured the hearts of everyone at the All England Club.

But it just wasn’t meant to be for her this year. She looked somewhat overmatched and Marion did a great job of keeping her out of her comfort zone.

It’s a shame to see her come so close and falter, but at such a young age, we’re sure we’ll be seeing Sabine in major finals for years to come.

Another great Wimbledon tourney has come to a close for the ladies — now onto the men’s final on July 7!
