Lou, who starred in the ’80s ‘Cosby Show’ spin-off on NBC, passed away on Feb. 19 after a series of health scares. So sad.

Lou Myers, the actor famous for playing Mr. Vernon Gaines on A Different World, the successful spin-off of The Cosby Show that ran for six seasons in the late ’80s on NBC, passed away in West Virginia following a heart-related emergency on Feb. 19.

The President of the actor’s non-profit organization spoke with TMZ, telling the website that Lou was in the care of the Charleston Medical Center at the time of his passing. It’s reported that his heart stopped earlier on the 19th. Doctors revived him, but he fell into a coma and died just hours later.

Lou Myers’ Health Woes

Lou’s health troubles began when he was hospitalized in December for pneumonia, but was released after New Year’s. He collapsed in his home a few weeks later, leading to a second hospitalization.

TMZ reports that an autopsy has been scheduled to ascertain the official cause of death. The website says that Lou, who had served in the Army, will be given a military burial in West Virginia. He is survived by his 95-year-old mother and his son.

Lou’s Mystery Age

According to the website, Lou’s Wikipedia and IMDb pages note his age incorrectly, as the actor reportedly lied about his age. While internet searches pull up a 1945 birthdate for Lou, TMZ says that official records reveal his birthday to be Sept. 26, 1935, making the actor 77 at the time of death. As one source told the website, “You know how actors are.”

Mr. Myers’ Notable Career

Lou’s most recent on-screen appearances were in the 2010 film It’s Kind of a Funny Story and Dreams, a film released on Feb. 1, 2013. Throughout his career, he appeared in many notable films and TV shows, including Volcano, Tin Cup, and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

Our thoughts remain with Lou’s family and friends during their time of loss.
