Louisville coach Rick Pitino emotionally addressed the media following his team’s win against Duke, and confirmed the severity of Kevin’s injury.
Rick Pitino was clearly affected by the ghastliness of his sophomore player, Kevin Ware’s leg injury that occurred in the first half against Duke, but he still managed to be informative, supportive and inspirational.
Kevin Ware Will Be Out For A Year
Rick explained that Kevin’s leg was broken in two places, and that he would have to wait at least a year before stepping back onto the court.
“Basically the bone popped out of the skin. It broke in two spots. It will take a year to come back,” the coach explained. During the interview Rick proved why he’s such a great coach, as he was upbeat and inspirational even in the face of this horrific injury. “He'll come back better than ever,” Rick added.
Rick continued, insisting that Kevin was courageous and the ultimate team player, even though his leg was in shambles. “All he kept saying – and remember the bone is six inches out of his leg — and all he's yelling is 'win the game, win the game.’ I've never seen that in my life.”
Wow. Truly amazing.
Kevin Ware’s Injury: Rick Pitino Turns Tragedy Into Inspiration
The assumption after Kevin’s horrific injury was that his team would not be able to withstand the highly emotional situation. But instead of folding, the Louisville basketball team channeled Kevin’s strength through severe injury to defeat Duke and advance to college basketball’s Final Four.
“We won this for him. We're all um, choked up in emotion for him,” Rick said. “We talked about every timeout – bring Kevin home. Unbelievable performance.”
Unbelievable indeed. While Kevin’s injury is truly heartbreaking, it’s incredibly touching how he and his coach were able to turn it into a source of inspiration.
