Brandon Holt, died on April 9 after his neighborhood friend, 4, retrieved a .22 caliber rifle from his home and shot Brandon in the head during a pretend shooting game. Now, police are considering charging adults for the crime.

Brandon Holt, 6, died in Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, N.J. on April 9 after being shot by his 4-year-old neighbor from 45 feet away. The shooting happened in his friend’s yard right before 7 p.m. in Toms Park, N.J. Family members have since opened up about the tragic situation.

Brandon’s Father & Uncle’s Statement After His Death

“It's not good at all,” Brandon's father, Ronald Holt told NJ.com. “He got shot.”

Another family member came forward about the confusion of the situation.

“I don't even know how it happened,” said Daniel Watkins, Brandon's uncle. He said the family is “trying to deal with it.”

The 4-year-old shooter’s parents are Anthony and Melissa Senatore. The boy’s father was described as an avid hunter by a source that is familiar with the family.

The Police Findings So Far

Toms River Police Chief, Michael Mastronardy, held a conference on April 9 and said that Brandon was in a go-kart in his friend’s yard when he was shot. It’s still unclear if the younger boy pulled the trigger or if the gun accidentally fired.

According to Chief Mastronardy, the 4-year-old’s parents were in the yard at the time during the shooting. Neighbor, Debi Coto told NJ.com she saw the 4-year-old boy’s mother wave down an ambulance around 6:45 p.m. and then the police received a 911 call.

Detectives Took Weapons From The Senatore’s Home

Hours after the 911 call was made, detectives took eight to 10 weapons from the Senatore family’s household. It has yet to be said who exactly owned the rifle that was used.

The case is now being handled by The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office due to a conflict of interest because a relative of the 4-year-old boy has a job in the Ocean County law enforcement.

Such a tragic situation. Our thoughts are with Brandon’s family during this difficult time.
