The producer of ‘Tropika Island Of Treasure 5′ says the reality show starring murder victim Reeva will air on Feb. 16 as planned. Is this in poor taste?
Reeva Steenkamp was set to star in a South African reality show before she was tragically shot and allegedly murdered by her Olympian boyfriend Oscar Pistorius on Valentine’s Day. Now, only two days after her death, the producer of Tropika Island Of Treasure 5, Samantha Moon, has said that they will be airing the show on Feb. 16, as it ”will be dedicated to Reeva’s memory.” Read on for all the details.
Reeva Steenkamp's Reality Show To Premiere On Feb. 16
Reeva, 29, was murdered on Feb. 14, and her boyfriend Oscar was arrested as a suspect for the crime. Before her tragic death, Reeva had filmed a series of Tropika Island Of Treasure, a celebrity reality show that has the same concept as Survivor. The series was set to air on Feb. 16, and still will, even though Reeva was only killed two days prior.
“As we grieve today with Reeva’s family & friends and struggle to make sense of this shocking tragedy, it has taken much deliberation to come to the decision to continue screening Tropika Island of Treasure 5 as planned,” Samantha says in the statement to Biz Community on Feb. 15.
“Reeva was an intelligent, beautiful and amazing woman, and we feel it would be an injustice to keep that unknown from those who did not know her personally. Every episode that she is in, every frame that she so ably dominates – shines with her light and her laughter echoes in every conversation, and we want to share these special memories with the rest of South Africa.”
Furthermore, Samantha says that this week’s episode of Tropika Island “will be dedicated to Reeva’s memory, coupled with a special tribute to her.”
While the tribute is a nice gesture, surely this is in poor taste? Reeva has not even been buried yet, while the circumstances of her death are still under investigation. It seems like it is too soon to be airing a show that shows her competing in a series of hazardous challenges.
Reeva’s family are not offended however, and they plan to watch the show.
Reeva’s Family Will Tune In To ‘Tropika Island Of Treasure’
“Reeva would’ve liked us to watch it,” her uncle, Mike Steenkamp tells PEOPLE. “She indicated that before the tragedy.”
