How awful. A Georgia couple plead guilty to starving and holding their teenage son captive for three years before sending him to California with a one-way bus ticket. When police found him wandering the streets, he weighed only 87 pounds.

On February 28, Paul Comer and Sheila Comer were sentenced to 15 years in prison after they plead guilty to locking up and starving their 18-year-old son Mitch Comer for 3 years. On Mitch’s 18th birthday, his parents gave him a one-way bus ticket to California along with some brochures about homeless shelters. After sending their son away, the couple got rid of all reminders of their son including his schoolwork and baby shoes.

Last September, a retired police officer spotted Mitch wandering around downtown Los Angeles. At 87 pounds with very pale skin, the police officer originally thought Mitch was about 12-years-old. After being taken into custody, Mitch told authorities it had been two years since he had seen the sunlight, explaining that his parents locked him up and made him beg for food.

On March 1, Paul and Sheila pled guilty to abusing their son in a Paulding County courtroom in Georgia. Although the couple was sentenced to 30 years in prison, they will only spend 15 years in jail because the other half of their sentence will be served on probation. By pleading guilty, the couple avoided a possible 100 year sentence and putting their children on the stand to testify.

According to the Atlanta Constitution Journal, the couple must forfeit all of their assets to create a trust fund for their three children as a part of the plea deal. Half of the fund will go to Mitch and the rest will be divided between his two younger sisters, all of whom are currently in foster care. The couple has yet to give a reason for their abuse, although they claimed Mitch wanted to go to California to become an actor.

“We have no idea why it happened,” Paulding County District Attorney Dick Donovan explained. “I don’t know why God makes people that are mean like that. I don’t think he makes people mean, but I don’t know why there are mean people like that. I really don’t.”
