After seeing all the trailers and posters for ‘Man of Steel,’ you might be asking yourself, ‘Who’s that guy playing Superman?’ Don’t fret — we’ve got everything you need to know about the new man in the red cape.
If you’re like us, chances are you’re going to be blown away by Man of Steel, but in particular by the man who plays Superman, Henry Cavill. Henry is a little-known British actor stepping into — and owning — an enormous role. So as you start developing a new crush on this superhero hunk, let us help you get to know him a little better — here are five things you should know.
Henry Cavill: Who Is The New ‘Man Of Steel?’
1. He’s One Of Five Boys
Though Superman’s an only child, Henry comes from a big family — full of testosterone. The actor definitely got his fair share of brotherly competition and horseplay as the second youngest of five boys.
2. He Didn’t Always Have That Six Pack
Believe it or not, Henry didn’t always look like he was cut from marble. The 30-year-old actor was referred to as “Fat Cavill” in his school days, he revealed to Details magazine. “I was fat. I became an easy target,” he said.
3. He Was Almost Edward Cullen
That’s right, Twi-hards – Twilight creator Stephenie Meyer had a different Brit besides Robert Pattinson in mind to play the lead vampire, according to The Daily Beast. Henry was Stephenie’s first choice for Edward Cullen, but the film’s producers decided he looked too old to play the high school-aged vampire. Oh, what a different world we would live in.
4. He’s Kicked Butt Before
Though his resume is remarkably small, Henry’s few prominent acting credits have been in strongman roles. On Showtime’s The Tudors, he played Charles Brandon, Henry VIII’s war hero right hand man — the only man in the kingdom brave enough to stand up to the king. And in 2011 he starred in Immortals as Theseus, a mortal man chosen by Zeus to lead the war against King Hyperion. Superman’s arch-nemesis General Zod is really just another butt to kick.
5. Russell Crowe Encouraged Him To Follow His Dreams
How’s this for full circle? Before Henry started acting, he had a serendipitous run-in with Russell Crowe, who plays Superman’s biological father in Man of Steel. Henry met Russell while he was filming Proof of Life in the late 90s, and asked him some questions about acting, he told Details. Soon after, Henry received a package from Russell with some swag a special note that read, “Dear Henry, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” What an awesome story!
So now that you know a little bit about Man of Steel’s leading man, you can really dive into obsessing over him. You’re welcome!
