Jean Stapleton: Iconic Actress Dies At 90
Jean breathed comic and endearing life into Edith, Archie Bunker’s long-suffering wife on All in the Family, one of the most popular television shows in the 1970s. She won three Emmys for the role and her co-star Carroll O’Connor, who played Archie, once wrote, “The benign, compassionate presence she developed made my egregious churl bearable.”
She was born in 1923, the daughter of a billboard salesman and an opera singer. She got her big acting break in 1949 when she was cast in the national touring company for Harvey. From there she starred in regional and off-Broadway plays, finally making her way to the big time in 1953 starring in In the Summer House as a wisecracking waitress.
Before coming to All in the Family, Jean appeared in both the stage and film versions of The Bells Are Ringing, and she originated the role of Mrs. Strakosh from Funny Girl, which later made a Broadway star out of Barbra Streisand. Her last major acting role was in the 1998 Meg Ryan film You’ve Got Mail.
Jean’s husband of 26 years, William Putch, passed away in 1983. She is survived by her two children, television producer Pamela Putch and television director John Putch.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Jean’s friends and family as they go through this difficult time. Rest in peace, Jean!
