The entertainment world was saddened to learn that one of its brightest stars had passed away on June 1. Jean Stapleton, known best for her iconic role as Edith Bunker on All in the Family passed away at the age of 90 in New York City on May 31, her family and agent confirmed. Read on to see some of the best pictures of the iconic actress.

Jean Stapleton Dies At Age 90

As Edith, Archie Bunker’s suffering wife who he often endearingly referred to as “dingbat,” Jean subtly stole All in the Family, one of the most popular sitcoms in the 1970s and now regarded as one of the most iconic series in television history.

Carroll O’Connor’s Archie had the spotlight as the intolerable dock worker who was condescending, smug, and almost foolish towards anyone whose opinions or attitudes differed from his, but as his bullied wife, Jean won viewers over with her sweetness and lovable naivete.

Jean was nominated for eight Emmys for All in the Family, and won three. Along with Carroll and producer Norman Lear, Jean helped make a television show that fearlessly broke through the timidity of US television by addressing social and political tensions. Edith’s comic relief was essential to undercutting the serious content of the show.

Besides All in the Family, Jean also won an Emmy for playing Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1982 film Eleanor, First Lady of the World and for a guest spot in 1995 on Grace Under Fire.

Jean will always be remembered for her talent, but most of all for the love and joy she injected into her every role.
