The 17-year-old rapper from Chicago’s South Side was taken into custody on Jan. 15 after a judge ruled a video of him shooting a semiautomatic rifle at a New York gun range violated his probation from a 2011 gun conviction.
Chief Keef, 17, was taken away from a juvenile court in handcuffs on Jan. 15 after a Cook County judge ruled he had violated his probation, and ordered him to be taken into custody.
The Chicago rapper, whose real name is Keith Cozart, released his debut album Finally Rich on Dec. 18, 2012. Less than a month later, he was in trouble again with the law.
Judge Carl Anthony Walker ordered the teen be taken into custody after he believed Chief Keef had violated his probation stemming from a 2011 gun conviction.
The rapper was caught on camera holding a semiautomatic rifle at a New York gun range, which the judge believe violated his probation.
Chief Keef’s Two-Hour Hearing For Probation Violation
During his two-hour hearing, an employee at the gun range testified it was Chief Keef who was holding the rifle in the video, which was shot by Pitchfork Media, an Internet music publication. The video was of an interview with the young rapper.
The judge ruled that when the 17-year-old picked up the gun, he automatically violated his 18-month probation sentence stemming from a conviction in 2011 where he pointed a gun at a Chicago police officer, according Andy Conklin, a spokesperson for the states attorney’s office.
The rapper is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 17 in front of the same judge, and is being held in a juvenile holding facility until then.
