Just 33 days after the Sandy Hook massacre, President Obama told Congress they must put children’s safety ahead of a triple A rating from the NRA in his press conference proposing gun control measures.
President Barack Obama spoke at a press conference on Jan. 16, specifically addressing gun control after the senseless Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Dec. 14. Along with this proposal, he said that we have an “obligation to try” to save lives.
Obama spoke, saying, “No law will prevent every act of evil. But if there is even one life to be saved, we've got an obligation to try and I'm going to do my part.”
He continued, “The only way we can change is if the American people demand it.”
“I will put everything I’ve got into this.”
Obama’s Proposals
1. Universal background checks, including to prove the gun purchaser is not a felon. “This is common sense,” Obama said.
2. Renewing a ban on military-style assault weapons.
3. Ban on high-capacity ammunition clips.
He also made a point to note that he is not trying to limit the second amendment — that gun owners who are using them for hunting or sport is fine.
Obama finished, “Let’s do the right thing for them and for this country that we love so much.”

On Dec. 14, Adam Lanza charged into Sandy Hook Elementary School on a shooting rampage, killing 20 five to seven-year-old students and six adults.
