…But did her plan work? (Spoiler alert: No.)

Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Matthew (Dan Stevens) returned from their honeymoon on the Jan. 13 episode of Downton Abbey, and when they weren’t banging each other’s proper little brains out, Mary was conspiring to save Downton without the help of Lavinia’s dollars — you know, because Matthew is “noble” and refuses to profit off his ex-girlfriend’s death. Whatever.

The plan was to throw an elaborate dinner party to convince Martha (Shirley MacLaine) to donate some of her fortune to save the abbey. But all hell broke loose when the oven stopped working — I blame Daisy, because she sucks — so the Crawleys were forced to resort to Plan B: an indoor picnic!

Somehow, the evening ended with Martha literally serenading a horrified-looking Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), and I was more than happy with that. I’ve always shipped those two.

But sadly, Martha can’t touch most of her husband’s money, so the Crawleys are still very much screwed.

OK, let’s see what everybody else was up to this week…

Anna & Bates:

Am I the only one who fights to stay awake every time Anna visits Bates in prison? I know their story is supposed to seem tortured and romantic, but really, it’s just boring. And her plan to save him sounds just terrible. This is why she’s a lady’s maid and not a lawyer.

Ginger Drama:

Thomas remained skeptical of O’Brien’s ginger nephew Alfred this week, and even tricked him into a burning a hole in Matthew’s dinner jacket. Fortunately, Martha’s slutty maid got him back by hiding Robert’s best shirts in between make-out sessions. Speaking of which, isn’t it weird how Daisy just happened to be there watching from the shadows both times she and Alfred hooked up? I knew Daisy was annoying, but I didn’t think she was crazy, too.

Oh, Edith:

Edith’s sad life became even sadder this week, as Robert told her 100-year-old, one-armed boyfriend to dump her. But in the end, Edith twisted Sir Anthony’s arm — his one arm, just in case you forgot — and he agreed to marry her. (Side note: Whenever Sir Anthony yells at Edith, I’m always afraid he’s going to backhand her… with his one good hand.)

Mrs. Hughes’ Health Scare:

Downton Abbey also took a decidedly darker turn this week, as Mrs. Hughes discovered a lump on her breast. Thinking it might be breast cancer, she visited Dr. Carson, who I’m not actually convinced is a real doctor — but maybe that’s my issue. Meanwhile, Mrs. Patmore reminded us all what an incredible human she is by remaining at Mrs. Hughes’ side the whole time.

What did you think of this week’s episode? Are you glad Edith (sort of) found happiness? Are you worried about Mrs. Hughes? Drop me a comment with your personal review!
