When Jodie took to the stage to accept her Cecil B. DeMille award at the Golden Globes on Jan. 13 she gave a shocking yet beautiful speech about why she felt now was the time to reveal that she is a lesbian. The entire crowd was in tears as Jodie spoke and she begged her mother to not be mad at her public admission.
Jodie Foster is such an inspiration. The 50-year-old actress told the millions of viewers at home and celebrities in the audience of the 70th annual Golden Globes that yes, she is a lesbian and she’s thrilled to be coming out and not hiding this any longer.
Jodie’s Emotional Golden Globes Speech
“A big coming out speech tonight,” she said. “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago in the stone age. Back in the days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met. But now apparently every celebrity is expected to expose the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a reality show.”
“I'm sorry, that's just not me and it never will be. But please support me because my reality show would be so boring. I would have to make out with Marion Cotillard, spank Daniel Craig's bottom just to stay on the air. But seriously, if you had been a public figure since the time you were a toddler. If you had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal, then maybe then too you'd value privacy about all else.”
“Someday in the future, people will look back and remember how beautiful it once was. I have given everything up there since the time that I was three years old and that's a reality show enough, don't you think. Love people and stay beside them. There is no way I could stand here tonight without acknowledging one of the greatest loves of my life. My ex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life, my most beloved BFF of 20 years, Cydney Bernard. I am so proud of our modern family.”
Jodie Has Always Been Very Private About Her Personal Life
In 2007 she won an award at a Women in Entertainment breakfast and she thanked “my beautiful Cydney.” She was referring to her longtime film producer partner Cydney Bernard. They met on the set of the film Sommersby in 1993 and together they raised two sons Charles and Kit. She has always refused to comment on being a lesbian until now.
Jodie and Cydney broke up in 2008 and she admitted during her Golden Globes speech that she is single.
