On Jan. 27, a young girl from Zapopan, Mexico gave birth to a 5.95-pound baby girl. The mother of the girl, who has so far only been identified as “Dafne,” told Mexican police officials that her daughter was only eight years old when she got pregnant, and that the father is a 17 year-old boy.
The 17 Year-Old Father Runs Away
The unidentified teenaged boy is under suspicion of rape, and has not been found by the police. “He ran away,” said Dafne’s mother.
Jorge Villasenor, from the state prosecutor’s office, insists that the boy has not been charged, but is just being sought after for questioning. “We are looking for the young man to get his story because she does not understand what has happened,” he says, though he does add, “This is a rape or child sex abuse case.”
The baby, born in Zoquipan Hospital, is healthy and doing well, according to doctors. Both the baby girl and her young mother were released from the hospital, though doctors say that they will need further examination because of the extraordinary circumstances.

The nine-year-old Dafne is not, in fact, the youngest woman to give birth. Yelizaveta Gryshchenko gave birth to a stillborn baby at age six in the Soviet Union in 1934. Even more astonishing, five years later, Lina Medina from Ticrapo, Peru gave birth at the age of five years and seven months.
