The iconic entertainer tragically died on May 10 — three years ago that is. After a newspaper incorrectly reported that Lena died yesterday, May 10, 2013, Twitter blew up and mourned the sultry singer’s death all over again.

In this day and age, one mistake can turn into accepted fact pretty quickly. On May 10, 2013, the newspaper The Sacramento Bee reported that actress/singer Lena Horne had died at the age of 92, citing an article by The New York Times. There was only one problem — the article was three years old, and Lena died in 2010.

Lena Horne Dies?

The Sacramento Bee’s mistaken post was all it took to get Twitter riled up though. Very quickly Lena Horne began trending, and users mourned and tweeted their condolences as if the star had just passed away.

“Just learned that Lena Horne passed away. Saddened. A legend. A true star,” one fan tweeted. “Crying so hard. I didn’t know that her death would affect me like this!” said another.

Lena Horne Died… Three Years Ago

Not surprisingly, there were also many who were scratching their heads as if to say, “Wait, didn’t Lena Horne die three years ago?”

“LISTEN UP: Today, May 10, marks the THIRD ANNIVERSARY of the death of Lena Horne. Got it? Third anniversary,” one fan tweeted trying to set the record straight. Another sent out the message, “Lena Horne died 3 years ago people. I'm judging you if you didn't know that already.”

This isn’t the first time Twitter has reacted to a mistaken report of a celebrity’s death — the social networking site has also been responsible for the false passings of CherDenzel Washington, and Jeff Goldblum, to name a few.

It just goes to show how quick we are now to assume truth, and how rumors and mistakes can spread like wildfire and become accepted as fact. The Sacramento Bee has since removed the original post from their website.

At least Lena was properly remembered — again!
