So emotional! The Arizona mom returned to the US and into the arms of her husband after drug allegations were dropped in Mexico on May 31.
After being held for nine days in a Mexico on suspicion of drug smuggling, Yanira Maldonado was released from jail on May 31. "I'm free. I'm free. I'm free," the Arizona native said. "I was innocent."
Yanira Maldonado Released From Jail In Mexico: Arizona Mom’s Charges Dropped
Yanira, 42, was in Mexico with her husband for a funeral, but was detained on May 22. Soldiers said they found 12 pounds of marijuana taped under her seat on a bus that she was taking back to the United States, according to NBC News.
Court officials reviewed security footage and realized that Yanira and her husband only carried blankets, water bottles and her purse onto the bus. Following this discovery, Yanira was released.
On May 31, Yanira told reporters, "Someone smuggled those in there, and I probably sat in the wrong seat."
Yanira Maldonado Won’t Return To Mexico For A While
Yanira hugged her husband, Gary, thanked her lawyers and was driven back to the United States. While Yanira said she would return to Mexico one day, it won’t be for quite some time.
