The inspirational singer was honored and remembered at his funeral on May 23, with multiple loved ones delivering touching speeches in his memory.
It was a poignant day at the Church of St. Michael in Stillwater, Minnesota, where Zach Sobiech’s funeral took place on May 23. While the ceremony was certainly filled with sadness and grief, the friends who delivered eulogies in Zach’s honor also recalled fond memories and preached his inspirational messages.
Zach Sobiech Remembered At Funeral
There likely wasn’t a dry eye in the church — decked out with ballons with the words, “Up, up, up” written on them — as the choir performed renditions of Zach’s massively inspirational song “Clouds,” but the most touching moments of the ceremony were the eulogies.
Reverend Mike Miller, the pastor of the church, talked about Zach’s undying will and his courage in the face of osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer. “We’re here today to honor a kid who went down fighting and who didn’t lose. Zach was someone who wanted everyone to know, ‘You don’t have to find out you’re dying to start living,’” Mike said.
The priest also emphasized how Zach was a bright spot in a world that can sometimes be so dark. Zach “touched people who were in a very dark place,” Reverend Mike said. “The way he did it was by giving them hope.”
Also drawing on Zach’s inspiring ways was a teacher from Fredericksburg, Va., who wrote the Sobiech family a beautiful email honoring their son. The reverend read segments of the letter to the congregation: “Even though Zach is no longer with us, he gives us all hope,” the teacher wrote. “Please tell the family ‘thank you’ for inspiring me and others to live a little more patiently, happily and empathetically. He truly did make the world a little better.”
Zach Sobiech’s BFF Samantha Brown: ‘He Taught Me To See Joy In Everything’
Finally, Zach’s best friend and songwriting partner Samantha Brown gave her thoughts on her amazing friend. ”He had a knack for making the person he was with feel like they were the most important person in the world to him,” she said. “The crazy thing about that is that, in that moment, they probably were. He truly cared for what people had to say; he really listened.”
“He has taught me to see beauty and joy in everything, and although today is very sad, it is also very beautiful,” Samantha added. ”Because what’s more beautiful than a congregation of lovely people celebrating the life of a beautiful young man?”
We totally agree with Samantha! All of these words are so touching, and they were the perfect way to honor Zach.
