Yet another Doctor Who steps down! Matt, who was the 11th incarnation of the show’s titular character, announced on June 2 that he would be leaving the show to pursue a film career.
What’s more amazing — how long the iconic British television series Doctor Who has been on the air, or how many different actors have played Doctor Who? It’s a toss-up really, especially considering that the list of Doctor Who actors will grow now that Matt Smith has announced that he is leaving the series.
Matt Smith Steps Down As Time Lord
In a statement on June 2, Matt announced his plans to step down from the iconic role:
Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realize all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.
The 30-year-old actor also made sure to thank the fans, who might be television’s most loyal fan base:
The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special.
Matt took the role in 2010 when David Tennant left the show. At the time he said it was an “honor” to play the part.
As of now there reportedly is not anyone lined up to become the 12th incarnation of the Doctor. There have been rumors though that this time around Doctor Who could be played by a woman, or a black actor. Helen Mirren and Idris Elba’s names have been mentioned, as well as Harry Potter star Rupert Grint and English actor Russell Tovey’s.
