Pete Seeger’s wife of died in New York on July 9 and the cause of death is unknown. Toshi’s passing came just nine days short of their seventieth wedding anniversary.
Pete Seeger‘s wife Toshi-Aline Ohta Seeger passed away at 91-years-old at her home New York’s Hudson Valley. The couple were married in 1943 and we’re sure Pete is deeply saddened.
Folk Singer Pete Seeger’s Wife Tooshi Seeger Dies
The couple built their home right after World War II and lived their every since. Although her husband Pete, 94, is incredibly famous for his songs about peace like “Where Have All The Flowers Gone,” she was known for constantly supporting various social issues.
The magazine Sing Out, which they co-founded in 1950 spoke about their marriage saying: “There's was a true partnership. Without Toshi's counsel and support, and always outspoken and direct opinions, it's clear to anyone who ever met these two remarkable people that, without Toshi, Pete would never have had the foundation and freedom to do the work that made him so legendary.”
Toshi was born in Munich, Germany and was half American and half Japanese. She grew up in NYC and studied at the High School of Music and Art. She met Pete in NYC and they married when she was just 21.
She was involved in the film industry too. Toshi’s 1966 movie Afro-American Work Songs In A Texas Prison is not in the Library of Congress archives.
Toshi leaves behind her husband Pete and their four children.
