How terrible! After Charles Saatchi publicly assaulted his celebrity chef wife of 10 years in June, the art tycoon announced he was filing for divorce on July 7, but you won’t believe his reasons why.
Nigella Lawson, the 53-year-old celebrity chef is splitting from her art collector husband, Charles Saatchi, 70. In an official statement, Charles explained why he decided to file for divorce, and it turns out that the breakup is directly related to the couple’s very public physical confrontation that happened on June 9.
Nigella Lawson’s Husband Files For Divorce
Charles stated that he is upset Nigella didn’t come to his defense after photos were taken of him grasping her throat violently and then pinching her nose while she bawled uncontrollably. He told Mail Online:
I am sorry to announce that Nigella Lawson and I are getting divorced. I feel that I have clearly been a disappointment to Nigella during the last year or so, and I am disappointed that she was advised to make no public comment to explain that I abhor violence of any kind against women, and have never abused her physically in any way.
The statement continues:
This is heartbreaking for both of us as our love was very deep, but in the last year we have become estranged and drifted apart. The row photographed at Scott’s restaurant could equally have been Nigella grasping my neck to hold my attention — as indeed she has done in the past.
We understand that couples break up and drift apart, but to put any of the guilt from Charles’ abusive behavior on Nigella just seems ridiculous. And while Charles states that their roles have been switched before — an astonishing claim — the bottom line is that he was the one publicly choking his wife.
Charles Saatchi Defends Violent Incident With Nigella Lawson
When pictures of the violent argument went public, Charles attempted to explain the fight to the Evening Standard on June 17, saying, “About a week ago, we were sitting outside a restaurant having an intense debate about the children, and I held Nigella’s neck repeatedly while attempting to emphasize my point. There was no grip, it was a playful tiff.”
He continued, “The pictures are horrific but give a far more drastic and violent impression of what took place … Nigella’s tears were because we both hate arguing, not because she had been hurt.”
Clearly Nigella and Charles have differences that cannot be reconciled, but we really hope he sees his own fault in that incident.
The couple were married in 2003; they do not have any children together, though they both have children from previous marriages.
