So sad. After disappearing on May 26, Cullen’s body was found in the woods in Baldwin, Michigan, police say.
Two days after calling his wife and saying he’s in danger, Cullen Finnerty’s death was confirmed by Lake County Sheriff Robert Hilts at a news conference on May 28. Cullen, a former Grand Valley State quarterback, was 30.
Cullen Finnerty: Dead At 30
“We were walking a good line,” Scott Boyd, who was on the search party that found the body, said to USA Today. “I squatted down. We had seen some trail. And a girl shouted. She walked right up on it. I thought, ‘Oh no.’ I can’t believe it.”
Cullen was found wearing fishing waders and a camouflaged jacket. There were no sings of foul play or any injuries.
“There was nothing obvious to us, to the view, of anything that would have caused his death,” Robert Hilts said.
Cullen Finnerty Calls His Wife: I’m In Danger
Cullen was reportedly fishing alone on May 26 on the Baldwin River, close to where his family owns a cabin, near Bray State Forest. Shockingly, he allegedly called his wife that night, May 26, and said he was in danger.
Cullen’s father-in-law Dan Brink said, “We had brats and hamburgers on Saturday and grilled chicken on Sunday. Everything was cool. It was a great weekend. We had a lot of smiles, a lot of laughs. There were no indications. There were no problems.”
Cullen then decided to go fishing Sunday night.
“It was a nice night on Sunday and we thought, ‘There is a nice stretch of the river,’ and he got himself one of those boats, and he had been practicing on it. It’s a riverboat, a raft. We were only a quarter mile from each other. He ended up exactly where we told him to end up.”
After Cullen called his wife, he disappeared. His small boat was found, but no fishing equipment.
Cullen had two children — so sad. Our thoughts go out to Cullen’s friends and family at this difficult time in their lives.
