The guys who brought you 'I'm on a Boat' and 'The Creep’ are back with an all-new album! In a round-table interview with reporters, The Lonely Island reveals how ‘The Wack Album’ came to be.
On June 11, The Lonely Island dropped The Wack Album, and you know you'll be laughing out loud and singing along to these comedic tunes — you’re probably already humming “YOLO” like us. HollywoodLife.com got the chance to talk to The Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer to hear about the inspiration for their latest record.
The Lonely Island Releases Its Third Studio Album
The trio first debuted its musical talents with Incredibad in 2009, and again in 2011 with the mega-hit Turtleneck & Chain, which brought us the hilarious classics “Jack Sparrow” (featuring Michael Bolton) and “Threw It on the Ground.”
The guys revealed how, with The Wack Album, they had to keep up with the changes in music to continue churning out hits like Grammy-nominated “I’m On a Boat” with T-Pain
“[The album] also has pop music changes,” Akiva said. “We're changing with it and trying to, you know, our references are referencing things that maybe didn't exist two and a half years ago when the last one came out.”
How The Trio Keeps Up With The Pace Of ‘SNL’
Although they are no longer part of the SNL cast and crew, Jorma said they still follow the fast-paced routine of the hit sketch comedy show:
We're honestly still on that pace right now because of our Wack Wednesday thing that we've put together and just our own sense of like … we're honestly a little control freaky about how all the product that we release comes out like start to finish. We're involved in the editing, producing, directing, all that sort of stuff and with songs too so the pace hasn't let up at all.
Middle School Friends Are The Toughest Critics
The boys has essentially been together since middle school, where they began their comedic journeys and have stuck together all the way to SNL and beyond. However, Andy revealed the difficulty of working with lifelong friends:
Usually it's just two-out-of-three wins. If two people think something doesn't work it's gone and if two people think it does it stays until proven otherwise … It's harder in some ways because you can't get away with anything because we know everything about each other.
After “Wack Wednesdays,” where they released a new video or song every Wednesday before the album dropped, and digital shorts on SNL, we’ve already memorized the lyrics to songs like “Diaper Money” and “YOLO.” This album is sure to be another hit for the group, and we’re anxiously waiting to hear who they will collaborate with next!
