Matt Osborne, aka Doink The Clown, Passes Away
The ex-WWE star was found by his girlfriend, who he had been living with, in her Plano, Texas apartment, according to TMZ. The cause of death is still unknown, and though police have reportedly launched a homicide investigation, a source tells TMZ that it is merely standard procedure, and that all indications are that Matt’s death was accidental.
The greasepaint-covered Doink the Clown gained popularity in the 90s, known for playing tricks on other wrestlers and even fans. He brought joy and levity to the sport, and revolutionized pro wrestling’s oddball humor, which still endures today.
Upon learning of Doink’s death, the WWE released a mournful statement:
WWE is saddened by the news that Matt Osborne, aka the original Doink the Clown, has passed away. A rugged brawler in promotions like Mid-South Wrestling and World Championship Wrestling, Osborne made a major impact in WWE under the greasepaint of a prankster named Doink — one of the most enduring personas of the early '90s. Our deepest condolences go out to Osborne's family, friends and fans.
Matt’s death is truly tragic, especially considering his relatively young age. His fans — and all pro wrestling fans — are surely grieving today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Matt’s family and friends in this difficult time.
