On August 3, a man ‘out for blood’ in Venice Beach, Calif. purposely drove onto the crowded beach boardwalk, leaving a path of destruction and carnage behind him.
One person is dead, and eleven more are injured after a hit and run driver sped into a crowd of helpless pedestrians on the boardwalk of Los Angeles’ Venice Beach on August 3.
Driver Kills 1, Injures 11 In Horrific Boardwalk Hit & Run
Witnesses of the shocking, unexplainable act of violence say the driver purposely turned onto the pedestrian walkway, and seemed to move “purposefully along the boardwalk” attempting to strike as many people as possible, according to the New York Times.
Besides the one fatality, one other person was critically injured, two more sustained serious injuries and eight others suffered minor injuries. Ten people in total were taken to the hospital.
Security footage shows the man’s black sedan zooming onto the boardwalk, turning people’s relaxing Saturday evenings into horrible nightmares as they dove out of the way and ducked for cover. “The driver was out for blood,” one witness told KCAL.
“I was half a mile from the scene, but you could see just this mass of people trying to get out of the way,” runner Daniel Rigedor told the Los Angeles Times. “I saw somebody fly up in the air… when I came upon the scene, there were a bunch of people on the ground, bloodied. Some looked pretty mangled, head injuries, just a lot of blood.
Venice Beach Boardwalk Hit & Run: Man Turns Himself In?
After racing down the boardwalk, the driver then fled the scene, but an hour later a man walked into a Santa Monica police station and stated that he was involved in the boardwalk incident, according to Mail Online.
As of now, police are just questioning the man and calling him a person of interest. No official arrest has been made.
What a sickening, seemingly meaningless act of violence. This sort of inexplicable horror — driving into a crowd of innocent people — is truly shocking. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who was injured in the incident, as well as the friends and family of the person who was killed.
