The 12th incarnation of Doctor Who has finally been revealed! Are YOU a fan of the casting choice?
It’s not a woman. Or Idris Elba. It’s Peter Capaldi! It was announced on August 4 that the 55-year-old British actor is set to become the 12th actor to play Doctor Who in the legendary BBC show of the same name.
The Next Doctor Who Is Revealed
Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat made the announcement that Peter would be replacing Matt Smith as the new TARDIS leader during the live BBC special Doctor Who: The Next Doctor.
Peter is a pretty good bet for the role of the Time Lord as he is already a veteran actor known for appearing on BBC television. Before landing this role, he was best known for playing Malcolm Tucker in the BBC show The Thick Of It. He has also had roles in movies like World War Z and In The Loop.
Peter spoke during the live special, saying that he is excited beyond belief to take over the iconic role:
Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer, but it’s been so fantastic.
Matt Smith Wishes Peter Capaldi Good Luck On ‘Doctor Who’
Peter’s predecessor, Matt Smith, also had some encouraging words and wisdom to impart as he takes the role of a lifetime. In a video message, Matt left his best wishes:
I just want to wish my successor all the best and say good luck and good on you for getting it. I know he’s a huge fan of the show and a really nice guy. The casting of it made me really excited it. I think it’s a really canny choice. Good luck, man. It’s going to be a thrill.
Second to the royal baby’s birth, this announcement is probably the biggest news in Britain all summer. Peter is stepping into a long-running cultural phenomenon, and we’re excited to see how he handles it.
