17-Year-Old Gives Birth On Plane From South Africa To NYC Mar 11th 2013, 16:23 Passengers on a flight from Johannesburg, South Africa to New York City’s JFK airport were in for a huge shock when a teenage passenger went into labor — and delivered a baby boy! Luckily, doctors were on hand to assist with the amazing delivery. Fatoumatta Kaba, 17, welcomed her son in the most unexpected way — at 38,000 feet! The teenager went into labor four hours into a flight from Johannesburg, South Africa to New York City, and luckily had two doctors aboard the flight to help her welcome her bundle of joy. Even though the moment would be terrifying for any mom-to-be, the young mother remained calm during the entire ordeal. "I wasn’t scared to have the baby, I was very happy,” she told the New York Daily News from Jamaica Hospital in Queens, where she was staying and being treated with her new son. "I feel better now after delivering the baby. Everything’s okay,” she added. Fatoumatta Kaba Goes Into Labor At 38,000 Feet Luckily for Fatoumatta, she was on a flight with two highly qualified professionals – Dr. Julie Williamson, who was on her way home from a medical conference in South Africa, and Dr. Steve Paridon. The 17-year-old went into labor four hours after the plane took off, and the medical professionals on board were on hand to help her through the delivery. “While there was a lot of discussion whether to divert the flight, she made the decision for us by saying, ”Push!’ Dr. Williamson revealed. “And when we checked, the baby was crowning, and she delivered him in two pushes.” The young mother, who is married to Gambian diplomat Abubakary Jawara, 38, was on her way to New York City to visit some in-laws, but says she might stay in the Bronx for up to three months.
