Music is the best way to release your emotions — just ask Taylor Swift! So many celebrity musicians have used their singing and performing talents to exact revenge on their exes and make sure they never forget them. Keep reading to see the biggest ones!
Songwriting is always easier with a broken heart. We’ve seen that time and time again, as celebrity musicians like Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, and the queen of them all Taylor Swift have used their songs to take digs at their exes. When we get dumped, we belt out our favorite revenge songs alone in our rooms. When these stars break up, they release revenge songs to the millions.
Selena Gomez & More: Classic Revenge Songs
Some revenge songs have cut deeper than others. The classic model for a revenge song might as well be Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River,” which was written with Britney Spears in mind. The lyrics (and really just the title) are so emotive and must have driven Britney crazy. JT also gets bonus points for the song’s music video, which showed him making out with hottie inside of a Britney lookalikes house.
Since JT redefined the revenge song, there have been others very worthy of praise. Demi Lovato’s song “Skyscraper” took shots at Joe Jonas with lyrics like, “Go on and try to tear me down/I’ll be rising from the ground.” Also, Katy called out her ex-husband Russell Brand with the song “Wide Awake” — she was literally saying that her eyes were wide open!
And Selena’s new song “Come & Get It” may not have vengeful lyrics, but its sexiness and attitude is perfect revenge on Justin Bieber.
Taylor Swift: The Queen Of Revenge Songs
But we should all bow down to Taylor Swift — she is obviously the Michael Jordan of making revenge songs. Nearly every boyfriend she has had — and lost — has gotten his own T-Swift song! John Mayer got “Dear John,” Jake Gyllenhall was shut down hard with “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” and Harry Styles was totally dissed by Taylor’s song, “I Knew You Were Trouble.”
Revenge songs are an artform, and Taylor is like Michelangelo.
