A Mother’s Day celebration turned tragic on May 12 when multiple gunmen opened fire on a crowd in New Orleans, La. At least 17 people were injured, including a 10-year-old girl.
Surely one of the last places you’d expect violence to break out is during a Mother’s Day parade, but that’s exactly what happened in New Orleans on May 12. Reportedly multiple shooters opened fire during holiday festivities, injuring at least 17 people.
17 Injured During Mother’s Day Shooting
There were about 200 people in the area of the shooting, New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Ron Serpas said. The 17 people were injured when they were grazed by bullets — thankfully, most of the wounds suffered were not life-threatening, and no deaths have been reported.
One 10-year-old girl was among the injured, though she was said to be in good condition. Reportedly, three or four of the victims had to undergo surgery, their conditions have not yet been updated.
NOPD Chief: ‘We’ll Get Them’
The Superintendent stated that the violent act was carried out by three suspects, who were seen fleeing the scene in New Orleans’ 7th Ward neighborhood. One of the suspects has been described as a man between the ages 18 and 22 with short hair in a white shirt and blue jeans, according to the Times-Picayune. Two guns were likely used. No arrests have been made yet, and a motive for the shooting has not been found.
The 7th Ward, where the shooting occurred, is a mix of low to middle-income houses. It was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and only about 60 percent of its residents have returned since.
New Orleans police have vowed to act swiftly and find the culprits of this senseless act. “We’ll get them. We have good resources in the neighborhood,” Superintendent Ron Serpas said.
