From one ‘SNL’ star to the next. On May 12, it was revealed that Seth would succeed Jimmy Fallon as the host of ‘Late Night!’

Looks like the whispers were true – Seth Meyers has officially been named the next host of Late Night, as Jimmy Fallon moves up to the 11:35 time slot for The Tonight Show.

Seth Meyers: The New ‘Late Night’ Host

There won’t be too much of a drastic shift for NBC’s late night TV lineup – Late Night With Jimmy Fallon will become Late Night With Seth Meyers next spring, according to Deadline. Lorne Michaels, the executive producer of Seth’s old show Saturday Night Live as well as Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, will produce the program.

“We think Seth is one of the brightest, most insightful comedy writers and performers of his generation,” NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said. “His years at SNL’s Weekend Update desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the Late Night franchise."

NBC’s choice to go with an SNL cast member, specifically one who hosted the Weekend Update segment, was certainly based off of Jimmy Fallon’s ability to turn a successful SNL career into a successful late night career — he too hosted Weekend Update.

The move also affirms Lorne as the king of late night TV. Not only has he been in charge of SNL since 1975, he was also the executive producer for Jimmy and will executive produce The Tonight Show with him.

Seth Meyers: Thanks Mom!

Seth was both humble and funny commenting on the breaking news. "I only have to work for Lorne for five more years before I pay him back for the time I totaled his car,” Meyers joked. "12:30 on NBC has long been incredible real estate. I hope I can do it justice.”

And as the news was announced on Mother’s Day, Seth didn’t forget to thank the woman who made all of this possible: “Thanks to NBC, Lorne, but especially Mom,” he tweeted.
