The feud between star golfers Tiger and Sergio turned ugly on May 21 when Sergio made an unbelievably insensitive, racist remark. The next day, Tiger took to Twitter to respond to his arch-rival.

A rivalry is always good for golf, but not when it gets ugly off the course. Sergio Garcia’s comment about Tiger Woods – ”We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken,” — took the bitter conflict to a new extreme on May 21. After Sergio made that insensitive remark, the world turned their eyes to Tiger to see the next installation in the he said-he said battle of words and on May 22, the iconic golfer reacted on Twitter.

Tiger Woods On Sergio Garcia: ‘Hurtful & Inappropriate’

“The comment that was made wasn't silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate,” Tiger wrote in the first of three tweets on the matter.

The 37-year-old superstar golfer took the high road for the most part — instead of punching back with an insult, he seemed eager to deflect the attention and move on from the comments altogether.

“I’m confident that there was real regret that the remark was made,” Tiger also tweeted. “The Players ended nearly two weeks ago,” Tiger wrote, referring to the tournament that reignited his rivalry with Sergio, “it’s long past time to move on and talk about golf.”

Sergio Garcia Apologizes For Racist Comments

For his part, Sergio, 33, did apologize almost immediately for his comments in an official statement:

I apologize for any offence that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players' Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.

Tiger and Sergio clearly don’t get along — and that bitterness amps up the drama for the sport in a mostly good way, but an athletic rivalry should never go this far. Hopefully the two golfers can do their talking with the clubs from now on.
