Jennifer is a true role model. At the 2013 Do Something Awards, she was recognized for the foundation she created with her sister to help improve education and healthcare for children, after the loss of her 7-year-old nephew.

Jennifer Hudson has stolen our hearts with her beautiful voice and loving personality. On July 31, Jennifer was honored at the Do Something Awards for creating the Julian D. King Gift Foundation.

It’s been four and a half years since Jennifer’s mother, brother and nephew were murdered. Now, Jennifer has decided to honor the ones she loved and lost by giving back.

Jennifer and sister, Julia King — who couldn’t make it to the show – were presented with the award by Ne-Yo after a touching tribute video. The video included photos of Jennifer growing up with her nephew, Julian, as well as footage of “Hatch Day.”

Each year on Julian’s birthday, August 14, Jennifer and Julia hold “Hatch Day,” an event where the community gathers to give school supplies to inner city kids.

The footage was emotional, and Jennifer immediately began crying. Once she got on stage, she laughed that she was a “cry baby,” and tried to pull herself together.

Despite her tears, Jennifer showed how strong and humble she was at the show.

Julian D. King Gift Foundation: What It Means To Jennifer Hudson

In 2012, Jennifer explained at a Look to the Stars event that being famous had it’s perks — and the greatest was raising awareness and helping others.

“I feel like your celebrity is not about the fortune or the fame,” she said. “But if you can't help anyone, then it's in vain — it's pointless.”

In addition to giving away school supplies to students, the foundation also helps families around the holidays.
“Where we came from, a lot of kids don’t have school supplies or school clothes,” she wrote in a post for the Chicago Sun Times. “Children should not have to worry about those things. When we went [shopping], you got two pairs of shoes and two pairs of clothes, and we were considered blessed. We make sure these kids have school supplies and [presents] for the holidays.”

“It is so important and so crucial,” Jennifer wrote about volunteering. “It builds your character and gives you good traits.”

Jennifer, we all are so moved by your selfless efforts.
