Top 10 VMA Moments Of All Time
1. Howard Stern As Fartman (1992)
Did you know MTV existed in 1992? Did you even know TV existed in 1992? Well, they both did; and long before Howard Stern was a beloved America’s Got Talent judge, he was Fartman. And the 1992 VMA ceremony was the perfect occasion for Fartman to bare his cheeks and do what he does best. I’ll give you one guess what that is. (Bonus points for being introduced by Luke Perry.)
2. Fiona Apple Calls The World ‘Bulls**t’ (1997)
We’ve all had bad days, but it seemed like Fiona Apple was having a bad life when she took the stage at the 1997 VMAs. What started out as a perfectly lovely acceptance speech quickly derailed and ended with Ms. Apple basically cursing out the entire planet. (In other news, you’re welcome for your award, Fiona. Sincerely, Earth.)
3. Diana Ross Plays With Lil Kim’s Boob (1999)
Two music legends literally went tit for tat at the 1999 VMAs when Diana Ross took a minute to ‘appreciate’ Lil Kim‘s pretty purple pasty. Needless to say, the entire ordeal was pretty… supreme! (Sorry, that was awful.)
4. Britney Spears Strips Down (2000)
The 2000s were a wonderfully weird decade for pop music, and Britney Spears kicked it off right with a mind-blowingly sexy performance at the 2000 VMAs. After a silky smooth rendition of The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” Britney stripped down to a sparkly nude bodysuit for a too-hot version of her then-hit “Oops!… I Did It Again.”
5. Britney Spears Kisses Madonna (2003)
Our girl Brit made national headlines once again in 2003 when she locked lips with Madonna during performance of her song “Hollywood.” The nation was up in arms over Britney and Madonna’s big kiss — conveniently ignoring that Christina Aguilera was also on stage with them and also kissed Madge on the lips. (Ouch!)
6. Britney Spears Performs ‘Gimme More’ (2007)
OK, I promise this is the last Britney moment — but how could I possibly make a list of the best VMA memories without including Britney’s classic performance of “Gimme More” at the 2007 ceremony? As much as the public was excited for her return to the stage, she wasn’t quite ready herself, and the whole routine was a hot mess. Oh, well, at least she looked… I mean, at least she sounded… eh, let’s just move on.
7. Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift (2009)
It was the diss heard ’round the world — then brought back up a million times for the next four years. During Taylor Swift‘s acceptance speech for Best Female Video, Kanye West stormed the stage to inform us all that, in fact, Beyoncé‘s “Single Ladies” was one of the best videos of all time. The upside? Taylor got an opportunity to show off that ‘surprised’ face she’s always practicing.
8. Lil Mama Jumps On Stage With Jay-Z & Alicia Keys (2009)
Taking a cue from Kanye, ‘musician’ Lil Mama jumped on stage during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys‘ 2009 performance of “Empire State Of Mind.” The difference, of course, is that Kanye is talented and people actually knew who he was when he did it. Her lip gloss may be cool, but Lil Mama’s spur-of-the-moment decision to join the performance was not.
9. Lady Gaga Wears A Meat Dress (2010)
It may not be the weirdest thing Lady Gaga has ever done, but wearing a dress completely made out of meat was definitely one of her boldest fashion statements. And in case you don’t speak the language of style, Gaga’s statement was something to the effect of: “Are you wondering what smells like dead animal? It’s me.”
10. Beyoncé Reveals Her Pregnancy (2011)
OK, no snark on this one. Beyoncé put on a killer performance of “Love On Top” — in freakin’ high heels no less — before unbuttoning her jacket and revealing her pregnant stomach. Both she and Jay-Z were beaming with pride and it was just kind of incredible. For everyone.
