George died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
George, who was famous for his sad vocals and wonderful songs, was in the middle of a tour when he fell ill, reports TMZ. He had already cancelled several dates, and had many more planned before his rather untimely death. He was planning to retire after this tour.
George is survived by his fourth wife of 30 years, Nancy Sepulvado, who is credited with saving him from cocaine and alcohol.
He has four children with his first three wives — two sons and two daughters. He was famously married to Tammy Wynette for six years, and their daughter Georgette Jones often performed with him.
George Jones’ Legacy
Many people say that George was the greatest living country singer of all time.
“For the two or three minutes consumed by a song, Jones immerses himself so completely in its lyrics, and in the mood it conveys, that the listener can scarcely avoid becoming similarly involved,” said country music scholar Bill C. Malone.
Waylon Jennings, in his song “It’s Alright” expressed his jealousy when he said, “If we all could sound like we wanted to, we’d all sound like George Jones.”
