After Rebecca’s scathing email to her sorority sisters went viral on April 18, the former Delta Gamma member was forced to resign. Her profanity-laced message surely brought embarrassment to the national organization, but it should never have been made public in the first place!
If we thought Rebecca Martinson was angry at her Delta Gamma sorority sisters for not being outgoing enough at Greek Week events, I can only imagine what her email outbox looks like now that she was forced to resign from the chapter. The junior at the University of Maryland, who made the mistake of hitting “send” on an irrationally harsh email to her sorority sisters, will forever be haunted by her lapse in judgement after the message went viral.
Rebbeca Martinson’s Email — Mean Or A Mistake?
With lines including, “I WILL F***ING ASSAULT YOU,” and “stop being a g*****n c**k block for our chapter,” there’s no denying Rebecca’s no-holds-barred email crossed the line. But it’s also clear that the college student was trying to prove a point. Even though her violent threats could be deemed offensive, her sorority sisters should have known that Rebecca was just speaking out of anger, and she wasn’t actually planning on “c**t punting” anyone.
The tone of Rebecca’s email, and the method in which it was delivered — via a list serve to a number of people and not targeted to anyone in particular — looks more like an isolated lapse of judgement rather than a malicious attack or “bullying.” She was clearly angry that her sorority sisters weren’t putting enough of an effort into their Greek Week events. Joining a sorority is a commitment, and some of the expectations include being sociable at events with other members of the Greek community.
However angry and threatening the message appears, it’s also pretty hilarious. I would argue it has been shared so many times to the point of going viral for her blunt sense of humor, including:
“I’ve gotten texts about people actually cheering for the opposing team. The opposing. F***ing. Team. ARE YOU F***ING STUPID?!!…YOU CHEER FOR OUR G*****N TEAM AND NOT THE OTHER ONE, HAVE YOU NEVER BEEN TO A SPORTS GAME? ARE YOU F***ING BLIND?”
Rebecca’s Email Will Unfairly Follow Her Forever
She also probably trusted her sorority sisters to handle this email with discretion, rather than sell her out to the national media — which will haunt her for the rest of her life. When she tries to apply for jobs after graduating next year, her digital footprint will include this horrendous email, and all of the media backlash that followed.
It’s unfair — how many mistakes did you make when you were 20? — and I’m sure if this were sent over a male fraternity list serve (as I’m sure many similar emails have), it wouldn’t have made it to national attention.
Do I think the email was appropriate? No — and she certainly shouldn’t be using gay slurs or poking fun at mental disabilities. But she was only forced to resign after the email went public. She should have instead been punished by her president, chapter advisor and standards committee, and the sorority should have handled the situation in-house.
No one is going to deny that she should have addressed her issues with her sisters “LITERALLY being so f***ing AWKWARD and so f***ing BORING” in a less profane and threatening manner. But I’m sure her fellow sorority members had a good laugh at her insane outburst — so much so, someone decided to send the email to the snarky news and gossip site Gawker.
Delta Gamma Members Who Sent Email To Gawker Are In The Wrong
The anonymous person(s) who shared the email with the national media can continue being productive, anonymous members of society, while Rebecca takes the heat for embarrassing her sorority and threatening her chapter’s members. Making the message go public and humiliating Rebecca in front of the nation, I would argue, is much more of a Mean Girls move than the tone of this email.
In the words of Rebecca Martinson, “I pity you because I don’t know how you got this far in life.”
