The president is in some hot water for complimenting the California female attorney general’s good looks at a fundraiser on Apr. 4. Are the criticisms justified or just an overreaction?
President Obama, your nonchalant, joking ways have gotten you in trouble once again! At a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in San Francisco, Calif. on Apr. 4, the president tried to warm up the room by making jokes — but one joke has many outraged.
President Obama Calls Kamala Harris The ‘Best-Looking’ Attorney General
Introducing California’s attorney general, Kamala Harris, at the fundraiser, Barack first praised her skills as an attorney general, calling her “brilliant” and “tough.” But then he said, “She also happens to be the best-looking attorney general in the country.” Some cringed, some laughed, and the president added, ”It’s true. Come on.”
What Barack probably saw as a complimentary joke has him in hot water, with people slamming him nationwide. Jonathan Chait, a writer for New York magazine, called the comments “disgraceful,” saying, “Women have a hard time being judged purely on their merits.”
And in the most unsurprising move ever, the Republican National Committee tweeted with snark: “Not awkward and perfectly fine for him to say, right?”
President Obama’s Comments: Offensive Or Not?
But is the outrage justified? Barack has a history of being a jokester — his speech at the 2011 Correspondents Dinner had people rolling on the floor laughing — so obviously he didn’t think he was being demeaning, and rather thought he was giving someone a compliment while slightly jabbing the rest of the attorney generals across the U.S.
As much criticism as Barack has received for his comments, he has also been defended by some. Jonathan Capehart, an opinion writer for The Washington Post, said the president wasn’t “cat-calling a woman he didn’t know… so lighten up, people.”
And Politico reporter Dylan Byers commented, “How did it become so difficult to call a woman good-looking in public?”
Reality is, whether the president’s comments were offensive or not, he might be better off being safe rather than sorry, and leaving people’s looks out of his speeches from now on.
