Selena, we know you had to be hurting when you split with Justin Bieber. But you deserve a giant high-five for not attacking him on your new album, like BFF Taylor Swift did to Harry Styles.  Your decision to hold back from a diss-athon shows maturity– and it’s made your romantic reunion with Justin possible!

Selena Gomez, not only is your career red-hot right now, but it’s clear that fame hasn’t lured you away from your morals! Justin Bieber may have flirted with models and broken your heart , but you wisely didn’t cross the line into permanently publicly dissing him by recording a revenge song. Instead the one song you added to your album about Justin is apparently focused on your ‘beautiful’ relationship.

Selena Gomez’s New Album: How I Wrote About Justin Bieber

Selena, you’ve always been far more mature than your age, 2o, would suggest. Although your BFF Taylor Swift, 23, has burned former boyfriends like Harry StylesJake Gyllenhaal and Joe Jonas in her songs, you admitted in an April 24 interview on Elvis Duran and the Morning Show that you wouldn’t go down that road.

You did share in the interview that you do address your on-again, off-again relationship with boyfriend Justin Bieber, 19 — but you’ve done your best to reflect on the romance with total class.

“I did record a song [about the split] because it's about the subject I went through, but it's beautiful,” you said. “If you're going to do it, that's the best way. Giving it to the fans and you having control over it, as opposed to someone spinning the story, was your purpose, you explained."

Selena Gomez: Writing About Your Relationship Is Therapeutic, Not A Diss

Selena, you’re an artist and so there’s nothing wrong with you using your life experience as singing material. Justin was the love of your life, and you two have been deeply involved on and off now for more than two years.  Justin himself has referenced you in the song, “Nothing Like Us.” But I respect the fact that you are choosing to remember the “beautiful” aspects of your time together in one emotional anthem, rather than dwell on the heartbreak for an entire record.

The best part? Your recent reconciliation with Justin will not be hurt by any lyrics that you wrote or recorded while you were upset with him. Music lasts forever, and if you were to write a Katy Perry- or Taylor Swift-style kiss-off to Justin, there would be no turning back. Case in point: Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. Taylor’s anthem, ” I Knew You Were Trouble”, and her pointed performances of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together ,” didn’t just close the door on any potential reconciliation with Harry,  but have forever left a legacy of intense bitterness between the exes. Instead, you and Justin have already rekindled your love, to such an extent that Justin just inked your image on his arm.

Selena – your decision to hold back from nastily attacking Justin has already paid off personally  and it reveals once again, your inherent strength and confidence. It proves that you are a GREAT role model for any young woman who has split up with the love of her life. You should NEVER say never. Love situations do change and can be happily salvaged!
