How tragic. After Audrie was sexually battered by three teenage boys, she committed suicide when pictures of the assault circulated online last fall. Now, three boys have been arrested in the case.
In a case very similar to Rehtaeh Parson‘s, Audrie Pott, a California teenager, committed suicide after photos from her sexual assault surfaced online in September 2012. Three 16-year-old boys were arrested on April 11 for allegedly raping Audrie, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jose Cardoza.
Two of the boys attended Audrie’s school, Saratoga High School, and the other boy attended Christopher High School in Gilroy, CA.
During the first week of September, Audrie attended a house party at a friend’s house while the parents were out of town. At the party, Audrie got drunk and passed out in a bedroom with several boys, where she was sexually assaulted. After the assault, the boys spread pictures from the attack and they eventually ended up on the internet.
After the pictures leaked, Audrie posted on her Facebook page, “The whole school knows…My life is ruined.” Eight days later, on September 12, she committed suicide.
Audrie’s family, who was not aware of the sexual assault until after her suicide, want the teenage boys to be tried as adults. “What these boys did is beyond unconscionable,” Audrie’s family attorney Robert Allard said. “They should be held to the highest standard of the law to make sure this never ever happens again.”
The three 16-year-old boys are currently being held at Juvenile Hall, and are expected to face a detention hearing early next week.
