In moments of sheer terror and bloodshed during the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, one couple received life-changing news at the hospital after being severely injured — they were pregnant with their first child, months after trying to conceive. They revealed the good news on Father’s Day weekend.
Caroline Reinsch, 39, and Christian Williams, 41, were at the finish line of the Boston Marathon to cheer on a friend when two bombs exploded, injuring more than 200 innocent people and killing three. Both Caroline and Christian suffered serious leg injuries in the blasts, but news of their pregnancy and new baby replaced their fears and sadness with pure joy.
Couple Learn of Pregnancy In Hospital After Bombings
The blasts ripped Christian’s legs and right hand open, while his girlfriend Caroline suffered a bloody hole in her thigh and a split quad muscle. The pair were taken to different hospitals, Caroline to Faulkner Hospital and Christian to Beth Israel. Caroline was released 11 days later, and she immediately went to Beth Israel to visit Christian, who was coming out of his sixth surgery.
Immediately after arriving at the hospital, Caroline was asked by an X-ray technician if she could be pregnant, which she didn’t think she was. It wasn’t until after her release that she was told that her pregnancy test given at the hospital resulted in a “slight positive,” which meant that it was too early to tell for sure, but there was definitely a possibility that she was in fact pregnant.
Caroline Shares the Pregnancy News With Boyfriend Still In The Hospital
Caroline took two home pregnancy tests — one at home, and the other in a hospital restroom down the hall from her boyfriend. Both came out positive. She brought the tests to Christian’s bedside, handing him the stick while telling him, “I have something for you.”
“Any pain or suffering I felt has been replaced with joy,” Christian told the Boston Globe. “Discovering that I was going to be a father is how I’ll always remember the Marathon.”
After the traumatic events of the Boston Marathon, the couple is on the road to recovery. “The best part of the last three weeks at home had nothing to do with being home and everything to do with seeing Christian every day,” Caroline shared on their fundraising website.
“Seeing him graduate from hospital to rehab, from bed to walker, from walker to cane, and this past weekend… from rehab to home.”
