Charice — you’re a megastar in your native Philippines and have millions of devoted fans around the world. Your decision to reveal your sexuality was an inspiration.

Charice, the decision to come out publicly has to always be a tough one for any person in the public eye. Sexuality is such a private matter.

Charice: You’re So Brave To Come Out

You’re a young woman — just 21 — from a country that is quite conservative. Yet you decided to officially come out while on a popular Filipino TV show, The Buzz, on June 2.

“Yes, I’m a lesbian,” you responded when host Boy Abunda asked about your sexuality.

“Now I feel free,” you said. “I can go out of the house without fear and certain that I’m not stepping on anybody’s toes.”

This was clearly a well thought out decision but it nevertheless exacted an emotional toll.

You ended your interview in tears, asking forgiveness from people who might not be able to understand or accept you for who you are. But you also thanked those “who can accept me.”

You’ve Encouraged Others, Charice

Charice — your honesty and your willingness to talk about your sexuality and even cry publicly because of the pressure you felt, make you an amazing role model in multiple ways.

Young women and men who’ve been hiding their true sexuality will feel encouraged and supported to come out themselves.

It is so difficult to live a lie — to not be able to be your true self in front of your close family and friends, and the world at large.

As you pointed out in your interview: “We are all equal, whether you are gay or straight.”

And that’s so true. And it’s admissions like yours that are helping to finally convince legislators that gay people must have the same legal right to marry, to adopt, and to receive all the legal benefits that heterosexual couples receive.

Charice — your fans have reacted so positively to your personal admission, pointing out that life is too short to play games — you need to be free and happy.

Their support must warm your heart.

Celebrities Should Feel Comfortable To Be Themselves

It’s wonderful that so many public figures have recently decided to reveal their true sexuality.

Basketball player Jason Collins, 34, became the first openly gay major professional athlete to come out and did it in a beautifully written cover essay for Sports Illustrated on April 29, 2013. It was a very risky move, considering he didn’t know if he’d be re-signed to another NBA team.

Subsequently, professional soccer player Robbie Rogers, 26, also announced that he was gay.

Charice, you’re a smart, talented and sensitive young woman who has now wowed us with your courage as well as your incredible singing voice.

In liberating yourself, you’ve liberated more young women and men who deserve to be happy and accepted. Congratulations!

Do you agree HollywoodLifers, that Charice is an amazing role model! Let me know!
