One of this week’s victims admitted to ‘crying’ all the way home. Spoilers ahead!

Book purists and newbie fans alike watched in silence June 2, as several major characters lost their lives on HBO’s Game of Thrones. But our collective pain pales in comparison to that felt by one of the actors whose character lost his life.

“We went into that scene with a heavy heart because we really love being on that show and we love working together,” Richard Madden said during a recent conference call.

As you recall, Richard’s Robb was among those killed, along with Catelyn (Michelle Fairley), Talisa (Oona Chaplin) and countless soldiers. Richard continued:

You don’t get to work with the same actors very often, and me and Michelle just had this great dialogue. … When we shot the scene, it took a few days because it’s huge, and there’s actually a moment in the scene where we look at each other and it’s Robb Stark essentially saying goodbye to his mother and giving up.

Shooting the scene, Richard revealed, was painful for everyone involved.

Crying On The Set

Richard went on to describe the “difficult day” the cast and crew had together:

There was lots of tears from many people, including myself, just for the fact the character, the way it happens … Robb Stark with his dead queen in his arms, and her stomach ripped open and blood pumping out of that. His mother getting her throat slit. It was a really disturbing day, and just because it’s such a big part of my life, of Michelle’s and Oona’s and all of the crew. We’ve gone through a lot together, from extreme weather conditions to just the journey of trying to make this show as best as we can and pushing forward against lots of things that have been pushing back against us. There’s just a total sense of exhaustion and it was horrific. These characters that you love get slaughtered.

Richard’s Personal Reaction

In fact, Richard admitted he couldn’t even stick around the set once his scenes had wrapped; he hopped a flight directly back to his native London!

“I didn’t want to be there anymore,” he said, admitting that he “cried the whole way. I was the crazy boy on the plane crying.”

(Can you imagine being on that plane next to him? Good Lord.)
