While the search is out for viable lungs for Sarah Murnaghan, her condition is deteriorating. The 10-year-old, whose case has stirred up controversy over the ‘Under 12 Rule’ for transplants, was intubated June 8 due to trouble breathing.
Sarah Murnaghan, 10, is on the adult transplant list for new lungs, but her condition continues to deteriorate as she waits for new lungs.
Sarah’s Declining Condition
Sarah’s case has caused controversy across the country. On June 5, a judge granted a temporary order to place Sarah on the adult transplant list.
While she continues to wait for a transplant, the 10-year-old suffering from cystic fibrosis was intubated June 8 due to additional difficulty breathing.
However, since intubation, her condition has improved her mother Janet said in a statement according to Fox News.
“Sarah’s heart has been the biggest win since intubation. Her pulmonary hypertension, caused by lung disease, has greatly improved with the ventilator,” Janet stated. “All her other organs are fairing well. She is a great, strong candidate for transplant still. Come on lungs!”
Further Review Begins For ‘Under 12 Rule’
The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, which sets national organ transplant policy, met June 10 to consider whether children under 12 were being treated unfairly in regards to organ transplants.
According to Philly.com, despite the OPTN’s criticism of the judge who ordered Sarah to be placed on the adult transplant list, the panel voted unanimously to allow transplant centers to request, on an individual case basis, priority status for children under 12 so they can push for lungs from older donors based on need. The special status would be granted or refused by the national Lung Review Board.
The rule will be in effect until July 2014. Let’s continue to hope that Sarah will receive the lungs she needs and that her case can open up hope for children just like her.
