The grieving co-creator of ‘Glee’ opened up about losing Cory in a new interview and revealed his truly devastating final interactions with the troubled, fallen star.
What makes Cory Monteith’s sudden death even more tragic is that as a victim of substance abuse, he so badly wanted to overcome his addiction. In a new interview, Glee co-creator, Ryan Murphy talked about that determination, which unfortunately wasn’t enough to keep Cory alive.
Ryan Murphy: Cory Monteith Wanted To Overcome Addiction Issues
Ryan revealed that Cory, before dying of a drug overdose on July 13, told him, “I want to get better.”
The Glee creator went into further detail in his interview with our sister site TV Line, describing the moment when he and Cory’s girlfriend Lea Michele staged an intervention earlier this year after learning that Cory had fallen back into his destructive behavior:
As soon as we found out, we staged an intervention with Cory that Lea was 100 percent running, out of love and trying to get him better, saying, "Look. Don't worry about your job; you will always have a job. Don't worry about fear. Don't worry about shame. Just worry about getting better and getting stronger…" He was like a son to me… He was both very loving and very sweet and also very stubborn… I thought he was going to fight me. He said, instead, "OK, I'm so glad it's over." He embraced it and went without a fight and got in a car and went to rehab.
Ryan admits that as far as he knew, Cory was doing much better after getting out of treatment, which only makes his death that much harder to accept.
Ryan Murphy & Lea Michele: How They’re Honoring Cory Monteith
The Glee boss is now taking it upon himself — with integral help from Lea — to properly honor Cory. In the interview, he revealed that they will be shooting a tribute episode of Glee, set to air during season five, and that the cast and crew are also organizing a memorial off-screen.
“We're planning a memorial service this week for the cast and crew and people at Fox, everybody who loved him,” Ryan said. “Lea’s been planning that and making decisions.”
Cory’s death is just so heartbreaking, but at the very least it is good that Ryan and Lea have each other and the rest of the Glee family to lean on as they struggle to move forward.
