What a finish! The Claret Jug was up for grabs for the entire final round of golf at Muirfield in Scotland on July 21, but in stunning fashion, Phil Mickelson was able to wrestle away the lead and keep it to win the title.

Golf always seems to be a little bit better when it’s being played in the sport’s native land. The best in the world were in Scotland on July 21 at Muirfield golf course to compete for the British Open Championship. And after flying under the radar for the first three days of the tournament, fan-favorite Phil Mickelson turned in an incredible round to take the title.

Phil Mickelson Wins The British Open

Phil, who has often had a flair for the dramatic (good and bad), came into the Open’s final round at +2, a shocking five shots away from leader Lee Westwood. But he showed true mastery of the links course — a real first for him in his career — and totally dominated on July 21, shooting an incredible five under par 66 to gain control of the lead.

After nailing a thrilling birdie putt on the 18th hole, Phil went into the clubhouse with a huge lead. The groups behind him tried their best to tie or overtake him, but the gap proved to be just too big.

This is Phil’s first British Open championship, and his fifth major win overall — he has previously won the Masters three times and the PGA Championship once. He’s such an ambassador to the game, and so beloved by golf fans, it’s great to see him come out of nowhere and win this one.

Tiger Woods Loses Yet Again

Tiger Woods pretty much had the exact opposite kind of day compared to Phil. Heading into the final round at -1, two shots off the lead, Tiger faltered early, bogeying three of his first six holes. He was never able to fully recover, finishing in sixth place with a score of +2.

It has now been 21 straight major tournaments since Tiger last won one, and his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus’ major wins record is starting look more and more impossible.

What a clutch performance by Phil! Were you rooting for him, HollywoodLifers?
